(b 1785; d 1838). English engraver. He was signing plates by 1804 and soon afterwards was employed by Rudolph Ackermann, engraving 18 plates for his Microcosm of London (1808; see Adams, no. 99) and 15 for his Westminster Abbey (1812; see Adams, no. 108). For the print publisher James Jenkins (fl 1807-18) he engraved most of the plates in Martial Achievements (1814; see Abbey, 1953, no. 365) and Naval Achievements (1816; see Abbey, 1953, no. 337). He was the chief engraver employed by William Henry Pyne on his History of the Royal Residences (1819; see Abbey, 1952, no. 396). Unlike some aquatint engravers who worked exclusively for the book trade, Sutherland engraved many topographical and sporting plates that were issued singly.
